Job Requirements

Research Assistant



The National Center for Freight and Infrastructure Education (CFIRE) has a need for a student research assistant beginning in the summer of 2009. The position will require about 20-30 hours per week and will involve assisting researchers as they conduct research on a project entitled: Establishing a Framework for Evaluating Freight Impacts. The position may be extended during the fall as a Project Assistant position.



The assistant will:

1. Participate in the design and conduct of a literature review on methods of evaluating the impact of transportation construction projects on the flow of freight.

2. Conduct a literature review on methods of evaluating the impact of new or expanded businesses on the movement of freight on the transportation system.

3. Help design and conduct telephone surveys of selected state departments of transportation and metropolitan planning organizations on:

a. Practices in conducting traffic impact and energy analyses of new business developments

b. Practices in estimating the impact of business developments on the generation of freight traffic.

c. Practices in estimating the impact of transportation projects on the movement of freight

d. Practices estimating the impact of transportation projects on business development

4. Assisting researchers in evaluating the information developed from the study.

5. Assisting researchers in documenting the results of the study.

6. Preparing visual presentations of the study results.
