CFIRE Helps Prepare State and Nation for Workforce Challenges

One of the most recent CFIRE reports issued in a draft format for review details the 2008 21st Century Workforce Summit that we hosted in December. The summit was attended by private and public sector officials with the goal of enhancing the communications between academia and the braoder transportation community.

The workforce summit brought these leaders from the transportation community and from educational institutions to:
• Explore factors that will influence transportation needs by 2020
• Estimate the impact that those factors will have on transportation agencies and
programs, and predict the impact that the changes outlined above will have on the
skills needed by transportation professionals
• Define approaches needed in agencies and educational institutions to ensure that
the future workforce has the skills that will be needed
• Explore institutional arrangements that will be needed to met the learning needs
of the future

The challenges are very real. We had declining transportation revenues, increasing transportation infrastructure needs, and a very real challenge with the skill sets of traditional disciplines to tackle the emerging problems.

I encourage you to read through the report and understand the challenges we face. The only way that our national economy and business outputs will remain globally competitive in the coming decades is if the people that we rely on to maintain, build, and operate the system have the right tools to make this possible.
